Every make fails in its own way. These are the jobs that come through the bays in Tacoma on Peterbilt units — 579, 567, 389 and the vocational 348 — running Paccar MX-13 and Cummins X15.
Same engine family as Kenworth, same failure pattern: EGR valve and cooler, DEF dosing, plugged filters and the derate that follows.
567 and 348 units doing short, heavy, high-cycle work wear brakes, suspension and driveline far faster than the highway trucks. We set PM intervals against the duty cycle, not the odometer.
The routine roadside call, and the one most easily prevented at PM.
Older chassis, more accessories, more connectors — intermittent faults that need tracing rather than parts.
The order matters more than the tool. We pull codes and freeze-frame data, read the history rather than the active fault, and measure before anything comes off the truck. On an aftertreatment complaint that means soot load, differential pressure and regen history; on an electrical complaint it means tracing the circuit instead of replacing the component the code names. You get a written estimate before the work starts, and a road test after it.
Two reasons, and neither is price alone. The shop sits at 1616 E 26th St inside the Port of Tacoma industrial area, so a drayage tractor is minutes away rather than an hour — and while the truck sits, the box on the chassis is accruing per-diem. And we work the trailer as well as the tractor, so a unit with an engine fault and a trailer ABS lamp is one visit and one invoice.
