Federal Way is where I-5 and SR-18 hand traffic to each other, and that interchange puts more trucks through a small area than the town itself ever generates.

The I-5 and SR-18 interchange

Most of what we roll for in Federal Way sits between exit 142 and exit 147, with the SR-18 interchange at the centre of it. SR-18 carries the freight running between I-5 and the Auburn valley, Sumner and points east, and the ramps climb hard in both directions. Trucks that were fine on the flat find their air and brake problems on that grade.

The interchange ramps themselves are a poor place to sit. If you go down on one, give us the ramp and the direction, not just the exit number — northbound-to-eastbound and southbound-to-eastbound are different worlds for getting a service truck alongside you.

Do you work nights and weekends?

Road service runs outside shop hours, because that is when most of it happens. The shop itself keeps normal hours: Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm, Saturday 8am to 4pm.

What do you need from me on the phone?

Where the truck is — exit number, mile marker, cross street or yard address — what it is doing or not doing, the unit and trailer numbers, and whether it is in a live lane. If it is a tire, the size off the sidewall and which position. That is usually enough to load the right parts before we leave.
