Tukwila is where I-5, I-405 and SR-518 all meet. More freight passes through this one interchange than through most cities, and almost none of it wants to stop here.
The worst possible place to break down
The interchange complex around Southcenter is a stack of ramps, weaves and merges with essentially no shoulder that is safe to stand on. A truck stopped on a ramp there is dangerous to the driver, to us and to everyone behind. Our first question on a Tukwila highway call is always whether the unit can move at all, because even a hundred yards to a wider spot changes the job completely.
If it genuinely cannot move, we come to it and we work to clear it rather than to finish it. The proper repair happens somewhere else.
Off the freeway, it is ordinary industrial work
Away from the interchange, Andover Park, Southcenter Parkway and the industrial blocks along the Green River are normal yard-and-dock territory: warehouses, distribution, service businesses and the retail delivery traffic that Southcenter generates. Those calls are calm, safe and easy to do properly.
The equipment mix is broad — Class 8 tractors, drop trailers, box trucks, liftgates, reefers and a lot of local delivery units serving the retail core.
Weaving traffic and what it does to trucks
Constant lane changes, hard merges and stop-start ramp queues are punishing on brakes and air systems, and the repeated heavy braking finds tired chambers, out-of-stroke slack adjusters and hot wheel ends faster than steady highway running ever will. Tire damage from curbs and debris is above average here too.
Getting to you from Tacoma
About 26 miles up I-5 — outer ring for us. Give us the exact ramp or the nearest exit number and the direction of travel; in this interchange a vague location costs more time than anything else.
I'm stuck on a ramp. What should I do before you arrive?
Triangles out if it is safe to place them, lights on, stay in the cab if traffic is moving past at speed, and tell us the exact ramp. If the unit will roll at all, a wider spot is worth far more than staying put.
