We are not a dispatch desk that sends somebody from out of town. The shop is at 1616 E 26th St in the Tideflats, the service truck leaves from there, and most of Tacoma is inside fifteen minutes.

The Tideflats, where most of it happens

The industrial flats between the Puyallup River and Marine View Drive generate more road calls than the rest of the city combined. Container yards, chassis pools, the terminals themselves, and the rail leads that cross half the streets down there. Trucks sit on uneven ground, back into tight spaces, and spend their lives at low speed with the air system cycling constantly — which is exactly the duty cycle that kills air dryers, glad hands and trailer brakes.

Being based in the flats is the whole point. A call on East 11th, Port of Tacoma Road, Lincoln Avenue or Alexander Avenue is minutes away, and if the repair turns out to need a lift we can often just bring the truck in rather than compromise.

The freeway side: I-5, SR-16 and the Nalley Valley

Tacoma’s freeway geometry is genuinely hard on trucks. The Nalley Valley viaduct and the SR-16 split put a climb, a merge and a curve in the same half mile. Southbound I-5 through the city carries every truck heading for Portland. When something lets go here it is usually brakes, air or a tire, and the shoulder is often too narrow to work safely — tell us which lane and which direction so we bring what we need to protect the scene.

The rest of the city

South Tacoma Way and the industrial pockets off 72nd and 84th run their own equipment: dump trucks, mixers, service bodies and heavy iron that never leaves Pierce County. Those are road calls too. So are the yards along Pacific Avenue and the businesses up on the hill that keep one or two trucks and no mechanic.

The service truck carries what actually fails on the shoulder: air lines and glad hands, brake chambers and slack adjusters, tires in the common drive and trailer sizes, batteries and cables, lighting and electrical parts, belts, hoses, coolant, fuel filters, air dryers and a diagnostic laptop for engine fault codes. When it is a road call and when it should come to the shop

Honest answer, because guessing wrong costs you a day. Tires, air leaks, batteries, lights, sensors, minor air and fuel system work, and most out-of-service items on a roadside inspection get fixed where the truck sits. Engine tear-downs, transmission and clutch work, alignment, frame and body work, and anything needing a lift belong at 1616 E 26th St in Tacoma. How fast can you get to Tacoma?

Most of Tacoma is inside fifteen minutes of 1616 E 26th St, and the Tideflats and port streets are closer than that. This is our home ground — if we cannot get to you quickly here, something unusual is going on and we will say so.

Do you work nights and weekends?

Road service runs outside shop hours, because that is when most of it happens. The shop itself keeps normal hours: Monday to Friday 8am to 6pm, Saturday 8am to 4pm.

What do you need from me on the phone?

Where the truck is — exit number, mile marker, cross street or yard address — what it is doing or not doing, the unit and trailer numbers, and whether it is in a live lane. If it is a tire, the size off the sidewall and which position. That is usually enough to load the right parts before we leave.
