Air brake chambers: which 30/30 we fit, and why

Spring brake chambers are the least glamorous part on a truck and one of the most dangerous to get wrong. Here's what we fit, where it goes, and the one thing you must never do to a used one.

What a 30/30 actually is

A "30/30" is two brake chambers in one housing. The service side is the one you use every time you press the pedal — air pushes a diaphragm, the pushrod moves the slack adjuster, the brake applies. The spring side is the parking and emergency brake: a very heavy coil spring that applies the brake when air pressure drops. That's why the truck locks up when you lose air. It's a safety design, and it's also why the spring side isn't a part you take apart.

The 30 refers to roughly 30 square inches of effective area on each side. Type 30 is the common size on tractor and trailer axles in this class; you'll also see 24 and 36 depending on the spec.

Where they go on the truck

Spring brake chambers live on the axles that need a parking brake — the drive axles on the tractor and the trailer axles. The steer axle normally runs service-only chambers with no spring, because you don't want the front brakes locking on an air loss at speed.

Physically the chamber bolts to a bracket on the axle, the pushrod connects to the slack adjuster, and the slack adjuster turns the camshaft that spreads the shoes. Two air lines: service to the pedal circuit, emergency to the parking circuit. Get those crossed and the truck will behave in ways nobody wants.

Long stroke versus short stroke — and why DOT cares

Stroke is how far the pushrod can travel before the chamber runs out of useful force. A long stroke chamber gives more travel, which means more margin as the linings wear before the brake goes out of adjustment. That margin is exactly what a DOT inspector measures.

Long stroke chambers are marked — usually a square air-inlet port, a tag, or trapezoidal identification, depending on the maker. This matters because the pushrod travel limit an inspector applies is different for long stroke. Never mix long and short stroke on the same axle. Different travel limits on the left and right of one axle is how a truck ends up out of adjustment on one wheel and out of service at a scale.

How we replace them

Short version, because this isn't a DIY article: chock the wheels, drain the system or cage the spring, cage bolt in and wound out to release the spring before anything comes apart, disconnect the lines, unbolt the chamber, fit the new one, set pushrod length, adjust the slack, then charge the system and check travel on both sides of the axle.

Always in pairs on an axle. A new chamber on one side and a tired one on the other gives you uneven braking, which pulls under hard stops — worse than the problem you were fixing.

The one rule that matters more than all of this

Never cut, grind or disassemble a spring brake chamber. The parking spring stores enough energy to kill someone, and it doesn't care that the truck is off. If a used chamber has to come off, cage the spring first with the proper cage bolt, and if the cage bolt won't wind out, the chamber goes to disposal as a unit. We've seen what happens when someone takes a grinder to one, and it isn't worth a hundred-dollar part.

Frequently asked

How do I know if I have long stroke or short stroke chambers?

Look at the chamber body and the air inlet. Long stroke is identified by the manufacturer — commonly a square inlet port, a stamped tag, or trapezoidal markings. If you can't tell, don't guess: an inspector applies a different pushrod travel limit to each, and guessing wrong is an out-of-service order.

How often should spring brake chambers be replaced?

There's no mileage figure. They're replaced when they leak, when the diaphragm fails, when the housing corrodes, or when the spring side won't release properly. On a truck that runs the salt and wet of this corridor, corrosion usually gets them before anything else does.

Can I just replace the diaphragm instead of the whole chamber?

On the service side of a serviceable unit, sometimes. On the spring side, no — that's the part you don't open. Given what a chamber costs against the labour of doing the job twice, we almost always fit a new unit.

Why do you replace both sides of the axle?

Because braking force needs to match across the axle. A new chamber paired with a worn one gives uneven braking and a pull under hard stops, which is a bigger safety problem than the leak you started with.
