Washington Chain-Up Laws for Truckers: A Quick Guide

Snoqualmie, Blewett, White Pass — Washington's passes can flip to chains-required with little warning. For commercial trucks the rules are stricter than for cars, and 'I didn't have them' is an expensive answer.

When chains are required

WSDOT posts chain requirements by pass and by vehicle class. When 'Chains Required' is up, commercial vehicles over 10,000 lbs generally must chain up regardless of whether they have all-wheel drive — the exemptions that apply to light vehicles don't apply to you.

What trucks need to carry

It's not just the chains

Chain law is the visible rule; the invisible one is the condition of the truck underneath. Marginal drive tires, weak brakes, or a soft suspension turn a snowy pass into a real hazard. Pass season is exactly when a bad brake adjustment or a worn tire stops being a maintenance item and becomes a safety one.

Get ready before the season

Before the passes turn, it's worth a quick check: drive-tire tread and condition, brakes and slack adjusters, and that your chains actually fit and are complete. We'll look the truck over and get you road-ready — and if you get stuck locally, our road service can come to you.

FAQ

Do commercial trucks have to chain up even with good tires?

Yes. When chains are required on a WA pass, vehicles over 10,000 lbs generally must chain up regardless of tire type or drive configuration. The light-vehicle exemptions don't apply to trucks.

How many chains does my truck need?

It depends on the truck and the posted requirement, but you need enough for the required drive tires plus spares in case a chain breaks. We can help you confirm what to carry.

What happens if I'm caught without chains?

You can be cited and turned around, losing hours and risking the load. Carrying correct, complete chains is far cheaper than the fine and the delay.

Can you get my truck pass-ready before winter?

Yes — we check tires, brakes and suspension and make sure your chains fit and are complete, so you're not sorting it out on the shoulder in a storm.
