Volvo D13 & Mack MP8 Common Problems

Volvo's D13 and Mack's MP8 share a lot of DNA, so they share a lot of the same trouble spots — mostly emissions and sensors, plus the automated gearbox behind them.

What we see most

The aftertreatment theme

As with most modern diesels, the D13 and MP8 rarely have 'engine' problems in the old sense — the block and rotating assembly are tough. What lands them in the shop is the emissions system: a NOx sensor, DEF dosing, or a regen that won't complete, any of which can push the truck into a derate to force the issue.

The I-Shift / mDrive side

The automated gearbox behind these engines is reliable but not immune — clutch actuator wear and sensor faults show up as rough or missed shifts and stored codes. It's usually a component, not the whole transmission, and reading the codes tells us which.

What we do

We pull codes and live data, test the actual sensors and aftertreatment components, and address EGR, VGT and DEF faults at the source — then verify a clean regen. On the driveline we diagnose I-Shift/mDrive faults down to the failed part. Straight answers on Volvo and Mack, no parts-cannon.

FAQ

Are Volvo D13 and Mack MP8 engines basically the same?

They share a great deal of design and many components, so they share the same common issues — mostly aftertreatment, EGR, turbo actuator and sensors. Fixes carry over between them.

Why does my D13 or MP8 keep derating?

Usually an emissions fault — a NOx sensor, DEF dosing/quality, or an incomplete regen. The derate protects the truck and flags the fault; we find and fix the specific cause.

What are common I-Shift / mDrive problems?

Clutch actuator wear and sensor faults are the usual culprits, showing up as rough or missed shifts and stored codes — typically a component fix, not a full transmission.

Do you work on both Volvo and Mack trucks?

Yes — both chassis and their shared D13/MP8 engines and automated gearboxes.
