A transmission rarely fails all at once. It warns you first — and catching those warnings is the difference between a clutch adjustment and a five-figure rebuild.
Signs to catch early
- Slipping — the engine revs but the truck doesn't pull like it should
- Hard, grinding or missed shifts — on a manual, often a clutch or linkage issue; on an automated (AMT), often a sensor or actuator
- Jumping out of gear or refusing to go in
- Whining, humming or a burnt smell — low or cooked fluid
- Leaks under the bell housing or on the driveway — seals and gaskets
Manual, AMT and automatic — different failures
On a classic manual, most 'transmission' complaints are actually the clutch — worn, out of adjustment, or a failing clutch brake that makes it grind into gear. On an automated manual (like an Eaton Endurant or Volvo I-Shift), the gears are fine but a sensor, actuator or software fault throws a code and puts it in a limp mode. Pulling the fault codes tells us which world we're in before anything comes apart.
Fluid is the cheapest insurance
The single most common cause of premature transmission and clutch wear is neglected or overheated fluid. Gear oil that's low, old, or the wrong spec runs hot and grinds components down. Keeping the right fluid at the right level on schedule is a few dollars that protects a very expensive assembly.
What we do
We start by pulling codes and driving it, so we treat the real fault instead of guessing. We check clutch adjustment and wear, fluid level and condition, sensors and actuators on AMTs, and look for leaks and heat damage. Whether it's a clutch, a sensor, a seal or a full rebuild, you get a straight diagnosis and an estimate before we open anything up.

FAQ
Is my problem the transmission or the clutch?
On a manual, grinding, slipping and hard engagement are usually the clutch or its adjustment — not the gearbox itself. We check the clutch first because it's the more common and less expensive fix.
My automated transmission threw a code and went to limp mode — what now?
AMTs protect themselves with fault codes. Often it's a sensor or actuator, not the gears. We read the codes, find the failed component, and get you out of limp mode — don't keep driving it hard in the meantime.
How important is transmission fluid service?
Very. Low or overheated fluid is the top cause of early wear. On-schedule fluid at the correct spec is the cheapest way to protect the whole assembly.
Do you rebuild transmissions or just replace them?
Both, depending on what's most cost-effective for your truck and timeline. We give you the options — repair, rebuild, or replace — with honest numbers.
