The air dryer is small and easy to ignore — until it fails and lets moisture into your brakes, valves and lines. In a PNW winter, that water can freeze and leave you with no brakes to release.
What the air dryer does
Your compressor pumps hot, wet air. The air dryer removes the moisture (and oil) before it reaches the tanks, valves and brake chambers. When it stops drying — a saturated desiccant cartridge or a stuck purge valve — water and oil carry downstream into the whole air system.
Signs it's failing
- Water in the tanks when you drain them — the dryer isn't doing its job
- Air spitting or oil at the tanks or from valves
- The dryer purges constantly or not at all
- Compressor cycling too often — a leak or a saturated system
- In winter, frozen air lines and sluggish or stuck brakes
Why it matters for safety
Moisture in the air system is more than a nuisance. It corrodes valves and rusts tanks, it washes lubricant out of components, and in freezing weather it can freeze a valve so a spring brake won't release — or worse, a service brake won't apply right. Air brakes are the one system where 'I'll deal with it later' isn't an option.
What we do
We replace the desiccant cartridge or the dryer, check the purge valve and governor, drain and inspect the tanks, and look for the leak that's making the compressor overwork. Before winter especially, it's cheap insurance against frozen brakes on a cold Tacoma morning.

FAQ
How do I know if my air dryer is bad?
The clearest sign is water in the tanks when you drain them — the dryer should be removing it. Constant purging (or none), oil at the valves, and frequent compressor cycling are other signs.
Can a bad air dryer affect my brakes?
Yes. Moisture past a failed dryer corrodes valves, rusts tanks and — in freezing weather — can freeze a valve so a brake won't release or apply properly. It's a safety issue, not just maintenance.
How often should the air-dryer cartridge be replaced?
It's a wear item on a service interval, sooner if you're finding water in the tanks. We check it during brake and PM service.
Why does my compressor run so much?
Usually an air leak or a saturated/failing dryer making the system work harder. We find the leak and service the dryer so the compressor isn't running constantly.
